Stout Blue-Eyed Grass (Sisyrinchium angustifolium)
Seed Collection Time:
Early to mid-summer — typically June through July, shortly after flowering.
Signs seeds are ready:
After flowering, the plant forms small, round seed capsules that turn tan to brown as they mature.
Ripe capsules begin to split open at the top.
Seeds inside are tiny, round to oval, and dark brown to black.
Capsules rattle when shaken, indicating full maturity.
Seed collection steps:
Clip seed stalks when most capsules are brown and beginning to split.
Place in a paper bag or tray to finish air drying for several days.
Shake or crush capsules gently to release seeds.
Clean seeds by sifting or winnowing to remove chaff.
Germination Tip:
· Requires cold-moist stratification for 60-90 days
o C (60-90): Refrigerate in moist sand or sow outdoors in fall.
· Seeds may be slow to germinate, often taking several weeks after stratification is complete.
