Fringed Loosestrife (Lysimachia ciliata)

 Seed Collection Time:

Late summer to early fall — typically August through October, after flowering ends.

Signs seeds are ready:

  • Forms small, round seed capsules that turn brown and dry as they mature.

  • Capsules begin to split open at the top, releasing tiny, dark brown seeds.

  • Ripe seeds are firm and fall out easily when the capsule is gently tapped.

Seed collection steps:

  1. Collect seed stalks when most capsules are brown and starting to split.

  2. Place capsules in a paper bag or tray and allow them to dry for 1–2 weeks indoors.

  3. Gently crush or shake the capsules to release seeds.

  4. Clean seeds by sifting or winnowing to remove debris.

Germination tip:

  • Benefits from cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days.

    • C(60–90): Store in moist medium in the fridge or sow outdoors in fall.

  • Seeds may germinate slowly, with emergence occurring in spring after winter dormancy.
