Virginia Waterleaf (Hydrophyllum virginianum)
Seed Collection Time:
Late spring to early summer — typically June through early July.
Signs seeds are ready:
After flowering, the plant forms round, green seed capsules that turn brown and dry as they mature.
Each capsule contains 2–4 hard, shiny black seeds about the size of a small BB.
Capsules split open naturally when ripe, so check frequently to avoid losing seeds.
Seed collection steps:
Monitor capsules and collect when they are brown and beginning to split.
Place capsules in a paper bag or tray and allow them to air dry for several days.
Once dry, gently open the capsules to collect the seeds.
Store seeds in a cool, dry place, or stratify soon after.
Germination tip:
Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days for reliable germination.
C(60–90): Mix seeds with moist medium and refrigerate, or sow in fall for natural stratification.
Germination may be slow and irregular, so patience is advised.
