Rose Mallow (Hibiscus moscheutos)
Difficulty: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
(Moderately easy — large seeds and pods, but must be collected before they fully split open)
Seed Collection Time:
Late summer to early fall — typically September through October, after flowering is complete.
Signs seeds are ready:
After blooms fade, large, rounded seed pods form at the tips of stems.
Pods turn brown and papery, drying as they mature.
When ripe, pods split open into five sections, revealing smooth, round, dark brown seeds.
Seeds are hard and rattle inside the pod when ready.
Seed Collection Steps:
Clip seed heads when pods are fully brown but before they burst open and scatter seeds.
Place pods in a paper bag or tray and allow to air dry for several days.
Break open pods and shake or rub them gently to release seeds.
Remove chaff by hand or with light winnowing.
Germination tips:
Seeds have a hard outer coat and benefit from scarification (lightly nicking or rubbing with sandpaper).
Cold-moist stratification for 30–60 days improves germination rates.
Seeds can also be sown outdoors in fall for natural scarification and stratification.
C(30–60): Refrigerate in moist sand or peat, or direct sow in late fall.
Sow seeds about ¼ inch deep, keeping soil consistently moist and warm (70–75°F) for best results.
Germination usually occurs in 2–4 weeks under proper conditions.
