Yellow Avens (Geum aleppicum)
Seed Collection Time:
Mid to late summer — typically July through September.
Signs seeds are ready:
After flowering, the plant produces rounded, bristly seed heads made up of numerous small achenes.
Each achene has a hooked style, aiding in animal dispersal.
Seed heads turn from green to brown, and seeds become firm and dark.
Seeds detach easily when rubbed between fingers.
Seed collection steps:
Collect entire seed heads when mostly brown and dry, but before they begin dropping seeds.
Place in a paper bag or tray and allow to air dry for 1–2 weeks indoors.
Rub seed heads gently to release seeds.
Use a screen or winnow to separate seeds from chaff.
Germination tip:
Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days.
C(60–90): Mix with moist sand and refrigerate, or sow in fall for natural stratification.
Seeds may be slow to germinate, emerging irregularly in spring.
