Prairie Coreopsis (Coreopsis palmata)
Seed Collection Time:
Late summer to early fall — typically August through October.
Signs seeds are ready:
Flower heads dry out and turn dark brown, and the central disc becomes brittle.
Seeds (technically achenes) are flat, dry, and dark-colored, with a wedge or paddle shape.
Seeds detach easily when rubbed between fingers or shaken over a container.
Seed collection steps:
Wait until flower heads are fully dry and seeds are loose, but collect before wind disperses them.
Snip entire dry seed heads into a paper bag.
Let dry for a few more days if needed, then rub or shake heads to release seeds.
Screen or sift to separate the seeds from chaff.
Germination tip:
Benefits from cold-moist stratification for 30–60 days, but may also germinate without it.
C(30–60): For more consistent germination, refrigerate in moist medium or sow in fall.
Lightly cover seeds when sowing — they need some light to germinate.
