Woolly Sedge (Carex pellita)

Seed Collection Time:

Mid to late summer — typically July through September, depending on your region.

Signs seeds are ready:

  • The seed spikes transition from green to golden brown or straw-colored.

  • The perigynia (seed coverings) become dry, papery, and fuzzy/hairy—a signature trait of this sedge.

  • Seeds are firm and dark-colored, and perigynia detach easily with gentle rubbing.

Seed collection steps:

  1. Use scissors to clip mature seed spikes when they begin to dry and discolor.

  2. Place spikes in a paper bag or mesh container to air dry for 1–2 weeks.

  3. Rub or gently crush the seed heads to release perigynia.

  4. Screen or winnow to separate seeds from chaff and fuzz.

Germination tip:

  • Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days.

    • C(60–90): Store in moist medium in the refrigerator or sow outdoors in fall for natural stratification.
