Graceful Sedge (Carex gracillima)
Seed Collection Time:
Mid to late summer — typically July through September, depending on your region.
Signs seeds are ready:
The seed spikes turn from green to straw-colored or brown.
Perigynia (the sac-like seed coverings) become dry and papery to the touch.
Seeds inside are dark and firm when fully mature.
Gently pulling or rubbing spikes should cause perigynia to detach easily.
Seed collection steps:
Use scissors or snips to cut mature seed heads.
Place them in a paper bag or mesh container to air dry for 1–2 weeks.
Once dry, rub or crush seed heads gently to release the perigynia.
Use a fine screen or sieve to clean the seeds from plant debris.
Germination tip:
Cold-moist stratification required for 60–90 days.
C(60–90): Store seeds in moist sand or paper towel in the fridge, or sow outdoors in fall for natural dormancy-breaking.
