Davis’ Sedge (Carex davisii)
Seed Collection Time:
Mid to late summer — typically July through September, depending on your region.
Signs seeds are ready:
The seed spikes transition from green to golden brown or straw-colored as they mature.
Perigynia become dry, firm, and papery, indicating maturity.
Seeds inside are hard and dark-colored, and perigynia will detach easily with a light rub.
Seed collection steps:
Snip mature seed heads when they begin to dry and change color.
Place in paper bags or mesh containers and allow to air dry for 1–2 weeks.
Gently rub or crush to separate perigynia from stems.
Use a fine screen or winnow to clean seeds from debris.
Germination tip:
Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days.
C(60–90): Refrigerate seeds in moist medium or sow in fall for natural overwintering and germination in spring.
