Bottlebrush Sedge (Carex comosa)

Seed Collection Time:

Mid to late summer — typically July through September, depending on local conditions.

Signs seeds are ready:

  • The dense, bristly seed spikes turn from green to golden brown or straw-colored.

  • The perigynia (seed sacs) are conspicuously long-beaked and hairy, becoming dry and papery when mature.

  • Mature perigynia detach easily, and seeds inside are hard and dark-colored.

Seed collection steps:

  1. Clip mature seed heads with scissors when they start to dry and change color.

  2. Place in paper bags or mesh containers and allow to air dry for 1–2 weeks.

  3. Gently crush or rub to release perigynia.

  4. Use a fine sieve or screen to clean and separate the seeds from chaff.

Germination tip:

  • Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days.

    • C(60–90): Store seeds in moist medium in the refrigerator, or sow in fall for natural overwintering.
