Plains Oval Sedge (Carex brevior)
Seed Collection Time:
Mid to late summer — typically July through September, depending on region and habitat.
Signs seeds are ready:
The seed heads (spikes) turn from green to tan or light brown.
The perigynia (sac-like seed coverings) become dry and papery, and detach with gentle rubbing.
Mature seeds inside are dark, hard, and oval-shaped.
Seed collection steps:
Clip mature seed heads using scissors or pruners when they begin to dry and change color.
Place in paper bags or mesh containers to allow air drying for 1–2 weeks.
Once dry, rub or crush the spikes to release the perigynia.
Screen or winnow to clean the seeds from debris.
Germination tip:
Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days.
C(60–90): Store in moist sand or paper towel in the refrigerator, or sow outdoors in fall for natural dormancy-breaking.
