Yellow Fox Sedge (Carex brachyglossa)
Seed Collection Time:
Late spring to mid-summer — typically June through July, depending on your region.
Signs seeds are ready:
Seed heads turn from green to straw-colored or brown.
The perigynia (sac-like seed coverings) become dry and papery.
When ready, the perigynia will detach easily when lightly rubbed.
Seeds inside are firm and dark.
Seed collection steps:
Snip mature seed heads when they’re mostly brown and starting to dry.
Place them in a paper bag or mesh container and allow to air dry for 1–2 weeks.
Gently crush or rub the seed heads to separate the perigynia.
Screen or winnow to clean the seeds from chaff and debris.
Germination tip:
Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days.
C(60–90): Refrigerate seeds in moist medium or sow outside in fall for natural stratification.
