Golden Sedge (Carex aurea)
Seed Collection Time:
Mid to late summer — typically July through early September depending on location.
Signs seeds are ready:
Seed spikes turn from green to straw-colored or golden brown as they mature.
The perigynia (seed sacs) become dry and papery.
Mature perigynia detach easily with gentle rubbing, and the seeds inside are firm and dark brown.
Seed collection steps:
Snip mature seed spikes with scissors when they begin to dry and change color.
Place heads in a paper bag or mesh container to air dry for 1–2 weeks.
Rub or gently crush seed heads to release perigynia.
Use a fine screen or winnow to separate seeds from debris.
Germination tip:
Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days.
C(60–90): Store in moist medium in the refrigerator or sow outdoors in fall for natural overwintering.
