Broadwing Sedge (Carex alata)
Difficulty: ⭐⭐☆☆☆
Seed Collection Time:
Mid to late summer — typically July through September, depending on your region and habitat.
Signs seeds are ready:
The seed spikes turn from green to golden tan or brown as they mature.
Perigynia (seed sacs) become dry and papery, often with a flattened, winged appearance.
Mature perigynia detach easily with a gentle rub; seeds inside are firm and dark-colored.
Seed collection steps:
Use scissors to snip mature seed heads when they begin to dry and lighten in color.
Place in paper bags or mesh containers and air dry for 1–2 weeks.
Once dry, rub or crush the heads to release the perigynia.
Use a fine screen or winnowing to clean and isolate the seeds.
Germination tip:
Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days.
C(60–90): Refrigerate in moist medium (like sand or paper towel) or sow outdoors in fall for natural stratification.
