Nodding Onion (Allium cernuum)
Seed Collection Time:
Late summer to early fall — typically August through September.
Signs seeds are ready:
After flowering, the plant forms small round capsules at the end of nodding flower heads.
Capsules turn tan or light brown and split open at the top.
Inside are small, black, shiny seeds that resemble tiny bits of coal.
Seeds fall out easily once capsules are dry and open.
Seed collection steps:
Wait until the capsules begin to split, but harvest before all seeds drop.
Snip seed heads into a paper bag or tray.
Allow to air dry for several days until fully open.
Shake or tap the heads to release seeds, then clean and store them.
Germination tip:
Requires cold-moist stratification for 60–90 days for best germination.
C(60–90): Refrigerate in moist sand or sow outdoors in fall.
Germination may be slow and erratic, so patience is important.
