Doll’s Eyes (Actaea pachypoda)
Difficulty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
(Moderate to challenging — seeds require careful handling and long dormancy period)
Seed Collection Time:
Late summer to early fall — typically August through September
Signs Seeds are Ready:
Flower clusters are replaced by white berries with dark “pupils” (the “doll’s eyes”)
Berries become fully white, glossy, and easily detach
Inside each berry are several small, firm seeds
Best collected before wildlife (especially birds) eat them
Tip: Red-stemmed berries are visually distinct and indicate maturity — avoid underripe green berries.
Seed Collection Steps:
Harvest ripe, white berries by hand
Gently crush berries and soak in water to remove pulp from seeds
Rinse thoroughly using a fine mesh strainer
Briefly air dry (1–2 days) on a paper towel
Store in moist medium (e.g., sand, peat, or vermiculite) in a breathable container
Note: Do not allow seeds to fully dry — they will lose viability.
Germination Tips:
Requires double dormancy:
~3 months warm stratification (60–70°F)
followed by ~3 months cold stratification (35–40°F)
Germination may not occur until the second spring after sowing
Sow outdoors in fall or simulate cycles in a refrigerator
Seedlings are slow to establish but reliable in rich woodland soils
Note: Patience is key — once established, Doll’s Eyes will persist for years.
Toxicity Warning:
All parts of the plant — especially berries — are toxic if ingested
Use caution when planting around children or pets
